Private Travel Cloud WIFI

One of our biggest problem was to store all those beautiful photos and videos we took with our camera during our trips. We are not a big fan using Smartphone for travel pics, resolution is a big negative point and the storage is limited.

Those days we have a laptop with us everytime we travel but somehow to carry 2kg of adpators, chargers and so on is not ideal. Laptop charger already weighs half the laptop weight.

Design for iOS, Windows, Android
Since we came back from our 40 days backpacking, I have been busy looking for other options and 2013 Google Nexus 7 32G was my picked. They claimed battery life can last 8 to 10 hours, now that is what I am after. The next problem I had investigated was how to get the photos from our camera to a hard drive. So I found one such solution on this Blog Post "How to Back Up Your Pictures Using an Android Tablet and External Hard Drives". Excellent idea so I went on purchasing the Google Nexus 7.

Somehow after few months, it seems that the idea was not totally perfect. What if my Nexus 32G had ran out of space, how am I going to do the media transfer from SD card to Portable Hard Drive?

After weeks of scouting for a better solution, finally found this product from China "Cloud WIFI". D-Link DIR-505 have a similar product but not as good as what I have now (think so). Here is what I have to say about this gadget.

  1. Build in 4000mAh battery
  2. Can use independently without power inlet
  3. Can charge any 5V USB devices (very fast)
  4. 3G Wireless Router supports WCDMA, CDMA2000, TD-SCDMA
  5. WAN Static IP Router
  6. Wan Dynamic IP Router
  7. WAN PPPoE
  8. WIFI Repeater (WIFI Extender)
  9. FTP Server (using it right now for our portable storage networking)
  10. Private Networking
  11. Built in mirco SD card slot
  12. USB External Storage Networking (this is what I needed most)
  13. Wireless IEEE802.11b/g/n 150Mbps
  14. Comes with English Instructions
  15. Comes with nice Charging Ribbon Cable
  16. Weighs 110g
  17. Size smaller than iPhone 5s

Here are some of the photos on the Cloud WiFi Router

Reset button, USB for charging or connecting Flash Drive/ External HD, Mirco USB-B charging port and Ethernet connection

 Micro SD Card Extension Port

Admin Interface for Network selection and settings on Nexus 7 (comes in English and Simplified Mandarin)

 Charging Smartphone

 Charging output 5V 0.75mAh

 comes with Ribbon Charging Cable

Experimental travel setup. Another item not included is the Goal Zero Nomad which I feel is a very good product. With this combination, we will be ready for any long expedition living off the Grid. Will do a review next time.

CURRENT EXPERIMENTAL SETUP
Current experimental setup is that I have the camera SD card connect to Google Nexus 7 using OTG cable. The Portable Hard Disk is connected to my "Private" Cloud WIFI. Using Android APP ES File Manager I have created our own portable FTP server. Yes, my Nexus is rooted so I am using OTG Helper APP to read files from the SD Card. The rest is just simple copy/cut and paste all through the Nexus 7

Do note any Smartphone can do the job and not necessary Google Nexus 7 so long you have a Rooted Device, Cloud WiFi and Portable Hard disk. Once setup up you do not even need any 3G or any external WIFI. You have you own WIFI networking and everyone or anyone can share all the files from your storage device. Best of all....every Gadget run on 5V.

Independent Networking Storage only a USB cable is needed

Current experimental setup, somehow found the OTG cable works better with a USB Hub. We had use this same USB 4 ports Hub in our last travel just for charging our gadgets and batteries.

Conclusion
This setup is great for anyone on business, backpacking, photographer or camping trips. Some hotel they do not provide WIFI instead an Ethernet cable, using the WiFi Cloud, you are able to have your own Private Wireless Networking in your room and your smartphone can even access to it.

More importantly, you have created a Mega WiFi storage for media files or anything you dump in the portable hard disk.

PS Cloud WIFI is tailored more to iOS user however as an Android user, I am still able to set everything up perfectly.

    1. I might have put not too clearly. If planning to transfer files from Camera SD card to Portable Storage you need a rooted device using App as Stickmount or OTG Helper.

If use only to access portable hard drive, then any smart device not necessary to be Rooted (tablet, phone laptop) can be used to access portable storage with Cloud WiFi. So you create own private network and if hook up with Ethernet cable, you can access Internet as well.
